Gov’t suspends Carlés Supreme Court debate in Senate

The government-aligned Victory Front bloc in the Senate will suspend the debate planned in the Upper House over the nomination of lawyer Roberto Carlés to the Supreme Court, as the party does not have sufficient support in the chamber to gain approval for the proposed new member.

Members of the FpV Senate bloc confirmed to NA, stating that while the session planned for tomorrow would not take place, the government would not withdraw Carlés’ nomination to the country’s highest judicial authority.

A vacancy on the Supreme Court was created at the start of the year, when Raúl Eugenio Zaffaroni stepped down from the bench. The government requires the support of a two-thirds majority in the Senate to name the lawyer, 33, as Zaffaroni’s replacement.

That number, however, looks increasingly unlikely, as the Upper House opposition blocs have already revealed that they would not support the designation.
