Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman’s lawyers have filed a new petition before the Federal Criminal Appeals Court calling for the removal of Germán Moldes, the prosecutor in charge of the AMIA cover-up accusations case filed by late special prosecutor Alberto Nisman.
In his complaint, Nisman had accused Timerman and President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, among others, of negotiating a cover-up with Iran over the Persian country’s alleged involvement in the AMIA terrorist attack.
Alejandro Rua, Timerman’s lawyer, said Moldes lacks “objectivity”. He argues the prosecutor has made “political statements” to the press and that he has “a subjective opinion different from the Public Ministry’s.”
Judges Jorge Ballestero, Eduardo Farah and Eduardo Freiler were present during today’s hearing. They will have to decide on Moldes’ recusal and on the prosecutor’s request to file an appeal before the Cassation Court, as they had previously dismissed Nisman’s complaint.
If they refuse, Moldes can still file an appeal before the country’s highest criminal tribunal.
