Kicillof blasts ‘income tax fetish’

Economy Ministry Axel Kicillof has questioned the strike called by transport unions for next week saying their income tax demands affect only “a small group” of workers.

“From all the salaried employees, this tax reaches only 11 percent of them,” Kicillof said in statements to media today pointing out the “income tax concept” must be defended as it aims at the “highest salaries.”

“This tax must be defended because it is one of the most progressive. Some attack it because they say it affects salaries, but that discussion is over,” he warned.

On Wednesday, transport unions ratified a strike for Tuesday 31 to demand an amendment of the income tax scheme. Secretary General of the anti-government splinter of the CGT labour confederation, Hugo Moyano, has also joined the protest action.

According to Kicillof, some sectors “seem to enjoy if Argentineans are doing bad in economy,” adding that the government “far from making mistakes, we take measures, we work to reduce inflation and today we have a price index that has been substantially reduced.

«I don’t know what unresolved matter they are talking about,” he said adding a «fetish» has been created over income tax demands.
