Israeli Embassy authorities in Argentina were holding a ceremony to mark the 23rd anniversary of the Israel Embassy attack in 1992.
Representatives of both the government and political opposition were present.
The event started at 14.45, the exact time when the car bomb exploded in 1992, killing 29 and wounding 242, including diplomats, children, clergy from a nearby church and bystanders.
The official ceremony by the Embassy was to be held on Monday, but it was postponed due to general elections in Israel.
Cabinet Chief Aníbal Fernández, Justice Minister Julio Alak and Deputy Foreign Minister Eduardo Zuaín were representing the government in President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s place, who had to travel to Santa Cruz province to follow her official schedule.
Buenos Aires City Cabinet Chief Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, BA City Culture Minister Hernán Lombardi, UCR Senator Ernesto Sanz and former Mayor Jorge Telerman were also present.
Israel’s Agricultural Minister Yair Shamir travelled to Buenos Aires for the ceremony. He took part of the event, delivering a speech in which he also mentioned the AMIA case, which was predated by the Embassy bombing.
Shamir highlighted the role placed by late AMIA special prosecutor Alberto Nisman saying he tried to discover the truth and ended up “paying with his life.”
“The terrorists of the bombing [meaning the AMIA attack] were financed by Iran with blind hate. Both atrocities have to be investigated without rest to take their perpetrators to justice,” he added, and concluded that Iran “continues to sow fear worldwide.”
