Gov’t sends to Congress bill to nationalize railways

Interior and Transport Minister Florencio Randazzo announced that the Executive has sent the bill to nationalize the country’s railways to the Congress Lower House today. “The goal is to recover the entire national railway system,” the official said.

The bill proposes the creation of Argentine Railways state company to run the trains.

“This company will make all decisions and will have authority over the entire system, for both passengers and freight trains.” Randazzo explained.

Randazzo pointed out during a press conference that the State has shown that it is much more efficient than private firms in managing the railways “in frequency, service and earnings.”

The project is expected to be approved by the Lower House “by Victory Front (lawmakers) as well as other (political) forces that have traditionally been involved in the defense of the railways,” the official said.

He stressed that the nationalization of Argentina’s railway system will allow the government to save a billion pesos annually.
