‘Supreme Court is responsible of probe into Israel Embassy attack’

Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman has said the responsibility of investigating the Israel Embassy bombing that left 29 people killed in 1992 belongs to the Supreme Court, echoing President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s statements during her address to Congress on Sunday.
Timerman’s saying follows a comment released by the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires today, which urged the Argentine government to continue investigating the attack while indicating the Argentine State is responsible for the probe.
The Foreign Minister highlighted Israel’s will to “continue the investigation into the attacks against the Embassy and AMIA [Jewish community center]” and pointed out it is, according to Argentine Constitution, the Supreme Court’s responsibility to investigate the Embassy case, and the Justice system’s responsibility to look into the AMIA bombing.
On Sunday, Ms Kirchner had wondered why Israel demands justice over the AMIA Jewish center bombing of 1994 but does not call for justice in the Embassy case. She stated she will summon former Israeli ambassador to Argentina Itzjak Aviran for questioning and said: “If the case does not move forward, don’t look this way,” meaning it was the Supreme Court’s responsibility.
Today, Supreme Court judge Ricardo Lorenzetti recalled a 1999 sentence by the then members of the Supreme Court that “determined Hezbollah was guilty,” during the speech that opened a new term for the Supreme Court. “We can not modify what has already been judged,” he said.
