Berni testifies security operation at Nisman’s home was ‘impeccable’

In testimony before prosecutor Viviana Fein, who is in charge of the investigation into the death of Alberto Nisman, Security Secretary Sergio Berni said the security operation at the late AMIA special prosecutor’s home was «impeccable».

The summons had been first scheduled for Tuesday 24 per request of Berni himself following a dental procedure he had already arranged for that date.

The secretary showed up before Fein today to be queried about the operation that was deployed in Nisman’s apartment, located in the Buenos Aires City neighbourhood of Puerto Madero, where he was found dead with a gunshot to his head on January 18. Berni arrived at the scene moments after the news were confirmed.

In statements to the press last week, he expressed his willingness to give his testimony considering the prosecutor’s decision to call him to testify “logical and correct.”

“It is logical and correct that the prosecutor summons me because she, with good criteria, divided the work. On one hand, she gave the Federal (Police) the responsibility to move on with the investigations into the death; on the other, to the Prefecture, the collection of every document that was there (in the apartment),” Sergio Berni had said.

Today, Berni assured the security operation at Nisman’s home was «impeccable» and guaranteed the crime scene was preserved by prefecture.

«We acted according to the corresponding procedural code. Anyone who says we didn’t must issue the proper complaint to justice,» Berni told reporters after having testified.

The Security Secretary said he does not «regret» going to the late prosecutor’s apartment and insisted saying nobody entered the bathroom were Nisman’s body was found.

«Nobody entered [the bathroom] until the prosecutor [Viviana Fein] ordered so,» he said, while adding he does not know what happened when the Swiss medical doctor called by Nisman’s mother entered the house.

Berni concluded saying he ratified everything he had already told reporters, and caled for the media not to «confuse» society.
