Del Potro announces comeback to Argentine Davis Cup team

Argentine tennis player Juan Martín del Potro has announced his long waited return to the Davis Cup team, even though he will not be able to play in the series against Brazil to be held in March.

The 26 year-old star said he does not want to force his comeback to the courts after the surgery on his left wrist, but will train together with the Argentine team and make himself available “for whatever the team needs.”

“I found very good predisposition with the new tennis directives. They seem eager to change Argentine tennis in a good direction. This being the case, they can count with me,” Del Potro told reporters today.

“The team captain [Daniel Orsanic] knows he can count with me. I hope this return [to the Davis Cup team] lasts for many years,” the US Open champion, who has had strong differences with the former Argentine Tennis Association (AAT) directive board, said.

The last time Del Potro played for Argentina was in the 2012 Davis Cup semi-finals against the Check Republic.

The Argentine team will receive Brazil between the 6th and 8th of March for the Davis Cup last 16 round. The winner will play against Croatia or Serbia.

Del Potro also stated he might return to the ATP tour in the Indian Wells or Miami tournaments, held in March, but he thinks its most responsible to wait “a little bit more”.
