Draw sends Huracán safely into Libertadores group stage

After a spectacular 4-0 victory in Lima Huracán did not need any further fireworks to book their place in the Copa Libertadores group stage, a task they completed by way of a dull 0-0 home draw against Alianza to pass comfortably through the preliminary round of the South American competition.

The Globo had done the hard work in an action-packed first leg, where Patricio Toranzo’s double added to goals from Ramón Ábila and Alejandro Romero Gamarra to down the hapless Peruvians. Anything short of a total meltdown would send the club safely through, and they saw out the 90 minutes today without further incident.

The first-half showed some signs of life, as Alianza maintained a remote chance of overturning their four-goal deficit. But as the game wore on Huracán’s superiority once more became apparent, and without breaking a sweat the team from Parque Patricios took the result needed. An early effort against the crossbar from the hosts was as close as either side went to troubling the scorers.

Huracán therefore advance to Group 3 of the Libertadores, a stage the club last reached all the way back in 1974. The Globo will face Brazilian champions Cruzeiro as well as Universitario of Bolivia and Venezuela’s Mineros, with matches taking place from February to April.
