Supreme Court Justice Carlos Fayt, who turned 97 Sunday, came out against criticism of himself, saying he will remain in the country’s top tribunal as long as he continues feeling “strong.”
“I will remain a part of the (Supreme) Court because I think I can make a contribution and I want to fulfill my duty,” Fayt told news channel Todo Noticias (TN).
Days ago, President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s Chief-of-Staff Aníbal Fernández said it should be evaluated whether the justice is fit to hold a seat in the Supreme Court.
In 2013, Fernández de Kirchner lashed out at the court’s oldest member.
“We can’t be having an almost centennial court member,” the head of state wrote on a Twitter rampage in what was a clear allusion to Fayt, although she never named him.
“The National Constitution establishes an age limit of 75 years to be part of the tribunal.”
