Opposition leaders reject SI reform

Lower House opposition caucus leaders have rejected the proposed dissolution of the Intelligence Secretariat (SI, formerly known as SIDE), announced yesterday by President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, as they consider it was made to “distract attention” from the death of AMIA special prosecutor Alberto Nisman.

Mario Negri (UCR), Darío Giustozzi (Renewal Front), Federico Pinedo (PRO) and Margarita Stolbizer (GEN) signed a four-point agreement today in Congress on the matter.

“The project to reform the SI is an attempt to further politicize intelligence organisms. Its goal is to distract attention from the main problem [referring to Nisman’s case],” the agreement signed states.

The opposition representatives also asked Congress to make government officials such as Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman and Security Minister Cecilia Rodríguez available for inquiry in the Lower House.

The lawmakers anticipated they will “demand” a meeting with the Supreme Court of Justice to discuss a mechanism to “back up the investigation of the prosecutor’s death”.

The controversial memorandum with Iran was also denounced and rejected in the document signed
