«El Conejo» freed as Lola murder probe continues

The prime suspect in the murder of Argentine tourist Lola Chomnalez in Valizas, Uruguay, a man known as “El Conejo” (The Rabbit) was released from police custody after witnesses failed to identify him as the man seen walking with the teenager shortly before her death.

According to judicial sources, neither of the two witnesses who claim to have seen Lola with a man on the day of her disappearance in the beach resort recognised the suspect in an identity parade held today.

Judge Marcela López subsequently released the man from custody, after hours of questioning over a possible involvement in the killing.

“El Conejo” was arrested in Valizas by the police, after an intense search launched on Monday, following the release of an identikit of the suspect.

Witnesses reported that the suspect was painting a roof in a house near Barra de Valizas (the beach where Lola was killed), with other two workers on the day of the murder and that he disappeared for a couple of hours before coming back with food and money which he said he had found on the beach.

The police believe that Lola may have been killed in an attempted robbery. Her backpack with 2,500 pesos, which she was carrying on the day of her murder, is still missing.
