Del Potro to play in Sydney despite wrist worries

Juan Martin del Potro has affirmed that he will play through the pain to return to action at the Australian Open warm-up event in Sydney next week after nearly a year out with a wrist injury.

The former US Open champion had hoped to feature this week in Brisbane but his left wrist was still causing concern.

«I missed the tour, I missed competing,» Tandíl native Del Potro, who won the Sydney title last year, wrote on Facebook.

«I don’t expect great results, I just want to feel the competition, I want to feel an active player once again, nearly a year after my last match. At this point I don’t care about the rankings. The situation is different. I take it as a reward for the effort that I put to come back.»

After signalling that he had learned from a previous wrist injury that he could not rush his return, and that he would continue to follow the advice of doctor Richard Berger, Del Potro signed off with a message of gratitude for his fans.

«As I wrote in a previous post, thanks for your support on my way back! You know that without your love, my will, the support of my team, my family and friends, this would not be possible. See you in Australia!»
