The Supreme Court has rejected a petition by an NGO questioning the appointment of Judge Laureano Durán. On December 19, Durán was sworn in as substitute judge for the La Plata federal court No.1, which is in charge of examining electoral issues for the entire Buenos Aires province, accounting for 40 percent of the country’s electoral roll.
According to sources familiar to the story, justices rejected an appeal filed by the Association of Civil Rights seeking to declare Durán’s designation “unconstitutional.”
Opposition parties have also strongly criticized his appointment bringing together a rare unified front to accuse the government of backing an allied judge to gain an upper hand ahead of next year’s general elections.
