Omar Chabán, the former manager of Cromañón nightclub which caught fire in 2004 with 194 casualties and over 1,400 injured died today after losing his fight against Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Chabán died at 12.40 at noon today at the Santojanni Hospital where he remained hospitalised in critical condition since September. He was sentenced with 10 years and nine months for the Cromañon disaster in 2010 but he had been granted house arrest due to his deteriorating health condition.
The immensely popular dance club, located in the seedy BA district known as “Once”, made headlines in the international press when, due to the negligence of rock band Callejeros and the venue’s managers, concertgoers lit sparklers, which started a fire on the ceiling. Since the fire exits were padlocked and did not open, hundreds of youngsters were trapped inside the club.
