Criminal Procedural Code makes progress in Senate

The Criminal Procedural Code reform has been cleared for debate in the Upper House by a Senate plenary commission, after 42 modifications were made to the original bill, sent by the executive.

The Code will be discussed in the Senate next Wednesday, as the ruling Victory Front intended.

Opposition representatives did not sign the dictum, as they wanted to have one more week to discuss the articles of the bill, and hoped to count with the opinion of National Prosecutor Alejandra Gils Carbó on the matter.

Victory Front senators did not approve, but promised to “keep on listening to suggestions” and said “even corrections can be made”, as caucus leader Miguel Ángel Pichetto said.

Among the modifications introduced in the reform, the controversial article on the expulsion of foreign criminals was softened. Also, foreigners who are properly registered in the country could ask to serve probation instead of being expelled.

The also controversial concept of “social upheaval” was erased in the article that stated it as a reason for “preventive imprisonment”.
