San Lorenzo could not sustain the hope generated by last week’s encouraging victory over Boca Juniors and fell once more in the Transition championship, going down 3-1 to Rosario to Newell’s Old Boys.
The home side had not won for six league clashes, but were fired by the goalscoring potency of Maximiliano Rodríguez and Ignacio Scocco as they condemned the Cuervo to their eighth defeat of the season.
Maxi hit a double while his strike partner added Newell’s second of the evening to push the Lepra in front.
With time running out in the first half, a low strike from Rodríguez evaded Sebastián Torrico and hit the back of the net to put the Rosario club ahead. There was an instant reaction after the break, however, as striker Martín Cauteruccio hit home to level proceedings.
The hosts never stopped chasing the game, and were rewarded 66 minutes into the game when Scocco gave them the lead for the second time. Maxi’s smart finish nine minutes from time rounded off a convincing victory, although the previous run of poor form means that Newell’s can hope for little more than a solid mid-table finish as the season reaches its final stages.
