‘Blue’ dollar sinks 38 cents in control fears, falls past 14 peso barrier

The informal rate of the US currency plummeted 38 cents to 13.90 pesos today. On Friday it had dropped another five cents, amid growing fear of tighter government controls on underground exchange houses.

Central Bank’s head Alejandro Vanoli renewed official warnings and said that the government will «reinforce» controls in the illegal dollar market. «It is important for the Central Bank to look after exchange rate stability and to to separate the wheat from the chaff: outside the law, nothing,» he stated.

Meanwhile, the US Dollar closed up half a cent at 8.52 pesos in Buenos Aires City banks and foreign exchange offices.

The blue-chip swap rate advanced 33 cents to 13.38 pesos, while the stock exchange rate rose two cents to 13.44 pesos.
