Despite the end of yesterday’s heavy rainfalls, Luján in Buenos Aires province remains on «red alert» due to the 5.08-meters swelling of the Luján River, which has caused new floodings, forcing over 200 people to leave their homes.
“At 6 am today the Luján river’s water level was of 5.02 meters and continued to rise (…) In the past hour it rose 12 more centimeters” a spokesperson of local fire fighters said an hour before it reached a level of 5.08 meters.
He explained that new areas of the city are under water and that if it goes on, floodings could reach the Luján Basílica, a traditional place of pilgrimage for Catholics.
“Until last night there were 200 evacuees but that number is expected to grow,” the spokesperson added. «We are getting several calls from people who went to bed last night to wake up trapped with water inside their homes.»
