Seven detained after shootout with federal prosecutor Stornelli

Police have detained seven suspects after bodyguards for federal prosecutor Carlos Stornelli fought off a savage attack from a group of thieves, who provoked a shootout as they tried to steal the official’s car.

The attempted robbery took place at 1pm in the City of Buenos Aires, close to a toll booth on the Arturo Illia highway. Stornelli, according to reports, was returning to his home in the province of Buenos Aires accompanied by armed bodyguards, in an official state vehicle.

At that point, the Federal Police informed, the suspects cut in front of the prosecutor in a Citrôen and a Volkswagen Bora with the intention of hijacking the car, which led the bodyguards to open fire.

Seven individuals of Colombian nationality were detained at the site of the crime, while other suspects are believed to have escaped on motorbikes. The Police added that nobody was hurt in the exchange. Security secretary Sergio Berni was on the scene and took control of the situation.

In a brief press conference convened at the site, Berni urged Congress to vote through proposed changes to the Criminal Procedural Code that would facilitate the deportation of foreign nationals caught seriously breaking the law.

«In the middle of the debate my mission is to tell society that the week has only just begun and we already have seven foreign criminals under arrest. But due to the characteristics of the crime I think that tonight they will already be free and in two months we will find them robbing again,» the politician fired.

«These are crimes eligible for bail and they will await their trial on the street. [Legislators] have to give the courts the tools to deport them, they have to discuss this in the Code reform.

«Many do not wish to repeat what I say because it is politically incorrect, but this is happening every day,» he underlined, revealing that in the past week 25 Paraguayans, Colombians and Peruvians had been arrested.

«These are the things which are really happening, in order to stop telling society fairytales, we have to take away their passports and deport them.»
