Mayer knocked out of Valencia Open in first match

Leonardo Mayer’s aspirations in the ATP Valencia Open were short-lived, as the Argentine fell to Spain’s Fernando Verdasco in the first round to ensure the home favourite joined compatriots Feliciano López and Tommy Robredo in the next phase.

Verasco took down the Corrientes native in three sets, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in today’s clash, ending Mayer’s chances in Valencia.

Robredo, meanwhile, had no trouble in taking down the United States’ John Isner in straight sets, easing to a 7-6, 6-3 win to advance to the second round. Fourth-seeded López also needed just two sets, overcoming Slovakia’s Norbert Gombos 6-4, 6-4.

Top seeds David Ferrer, Andy Murray and Tomas Berdych will begin their Valencia Open campaigns tomorrow, facing Andreas Seppi, Jurgen Melzer and Pablo Andujar respectively.
