Obama promises more aggressive Ebola response in United States

President Barack Obama pledged that federal officials would oversee the response to US Ebola cases in a more aggressive way, and said the Centers for Disease Control would send a «SWAT team» to any hospital encountering a new case of the disease.

After meeting with his cabinet for about two hours, Obama emphasized that the likelihood of a widespread Ebola outbreak in the United States was «very, very low» but said the international community must do more to help African nations struggling to control the epidemic.

The move suggested a higher level of concern at the White House after reports emerged that a second Texas healthcare worker who tested positive for Ebola after caring for a patient with the virus had traveled by plane a day before she reported symptoms.

The worker at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas had taken a Frontier Airlines flight from Cleveland, Ohio, to Dallas-Fort Worth on October 13, officials said.

Obama said yesterday that the US public healthcare infrastructure is such that an Ebola epidemic in the United States is highly unlikely.

«But obviously one case is too many, we’ve got to keep on doing everything we can,» he said.
