Lanús moved within two points of River Plate at the top of the Transition table with a 2-1 victory over Rosario Central, increasing the pressure on the leaders after drawing yesterday’s Superclásico against Boca Juniors.
Having drawn against the champions last week, the side coached by Guillermo Barros Schelotto were determined to take advantage of more dropped points by River as they fought for a hard-earned win in Rosario.
Goals either side of the half-time break proved crucial for the Granate. Silvio Romero struck 34 minutes into the game, while Matías Martínez added a second eight minutes after the interval to put Lanús in the driving seat.
Central struck back through Walter Acuña, but Miguel Ángel Russo’s men could not find the equaliser and languish 12th after the first 10 games of the season. Lanús, meanwhile, could overtake the Millonarios next weekend should they win and the leaders fall.
Independiente could have overtaken Lanús with a win over Godoy Cruz in Mendoza, but a 2-2 draw left the Avellaneda club unmoved in third position with 19 points, three behind the leaders.
Jorge Almirón’s men trailed twice, after Fernando Zuqui and Rubén Ramírez scored for the home team. But Federico Mancuello’s eighth goal of the season cancelled out Godoy Cruz’s opener, and Alexis Zárate stole a point for the 10-man Rojo towards the end to earn the visitors a draw.
