More than 500 students of the University of Belgrano had to be evacuated today, after a fire ripped through three offices in the educational institution’s principal campus.
The blaze occurred just before 2pm, in the building located at 1800 Zabala street, in the City of Buenos Aires neighbourhood Belgrano. No injuries were reported but students, teachers and other personnel were removed from the premises as a precaution.
According to preliminary investigations, an electrical short circuit has been established as the likely cause for the accident.
«Fortunately the fire did not spread to other areas [of the building],» UB rector Avelino Porto indicated to reporters, while confirming that there had been no injuries as a result of the blaze.
«We have carried out evacuation drills and this has gone very well,» Porto added in reference to the emptying of the building, while asserting that «classes will go back to normal» once the fire was under control.
