San Lorenzo too strong for Olimpo in 2-0 win

San Lorenzo jumped into the top-half of the Primera División table for the first time this season, as the Cuervo brushed aside Olimpo 2-0 in Bajo Flores to bounce back from a weekend defeat at the hands of Gimnasia.

The two sides clashed in a match originally scheduled for the first round of the Transición championship, but which had been suspended for almost two months due to San Lorenzo’s commitments in the Copa Libertadores.

A poor first-half saw both teams struggle to make an impact, but San Lorenzo grabbed the initiative just before the break. Mauro Matos took advantage of some slack defending to slide home after 41 minutes, opening the scoring for the hosts.

Néstor Ortigoza later made the result safe as he doubled the lead in the second half. The midfielder fired in a perfectly placed penalty, handing San Lorenzo three points against a lacklustre effort from the side based in Bahía Blanca.

The win puts San Lorenzo among a host of teams with 13 points from their first nine games, while taking into account goal difference the Cuervo sit eighth in the table.
