Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich dismissed any changes on Argentine immigration law, following the support expressed by different political leaders to Security Secretary Sergio Berni’s call for “legal tools” to expell foreigners who commit crimes.
“No. No changes in the immigration law is being analyzed,” was Capitanich’s terse response to reporters who asked about possible reforms in the federal immigration policy.
Renewal Front’s presidential hopeful Sergio Massa, UCR’s party leader Ernesto Sanz and Buenos Aires governorship candidate Francisco de Narváez have backed Berni’s criticisms of the justice system’s alleged failure to deport immigrants found guilty of crimes.
The Security Secretary’s remarks have made him a target of harsh criticism among Kirchnerite progressives, particularly members of the La Cámpora youth group.
Yesterday the federal government launched a Immigration Dialogue Round Table to “discuss public policy focused on migration,” in what could be an attempt to soothe the tensions within kirchnerites.
