Gov’t rejects reopening teachers’ salary talks

On the second day of a 48-hour teachers’ strike, Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich rejected the unions’ demands for new collective wage talks at a national level. «In no way we will encourage the reopening of national wage negotiations,» he stated.

“The collective wage negotiations began amid a declining trend of the price index,” the official said referring to the agreement reached on March. He stressed that since that trend continues, “there is no reason for reopening national salary negotiations, which are valid for a year”.

However, Capitanich referred to the other claims that lead to the walk-out: “If there are other issues, such as infrastructure, they should be addressed by provincial governors,” he said in his daily press briefing at government house.
