Ginobili World Cup in doubt as Spurs refuse permission to play

The Argentina national team could be without one of its stars in the upcoming basketball World Cup in Spain, after Emanuel Ginóbili was today informed by the San Antonio Spurs that, due to injury, he would not be allowed to take part in the competition.

The 37-year-old, who was crowned NBA champion with his team this year, was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right leg following the end of the season in the United States, although he had maintained that there was still a chance he could recover in time for the tournament’s start on August 30.

But in a letter sent to the Argentine basketball legend, San Antonio informed that in order to avoid the risk of further injury to the veteran, Ginobili would not receive authorisation to join the national team ahead of the World Cup.
