UNASUR leaders arrive in Brazil for BRICS summit

The head of States of the countries of The Union of Southern Nations (UNASUR) arrived in Brasilia to meet with its counterparts from the five emerging economies at a BRICS-UNASUR summit at Itamaraty Palace. They are to discuss their “many shared interests,” as host President Dilma Rousseff explained.

The Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner landed in Brazil yesterday to attend the summit. A delegation that included foreign minister Héctor Timerman and Economy and Industry ministers Axel Kicillof and Débora Giorgi arrived later to accompany the president.

The BRICS seeks to boost the influence of developing nations in the international community. One of the main topics in the agenda for the summit is “growth with social inclusion”, one the Argentine president is expected to address in reference to Argentina’s legal battle against the so-called vulture funds over its sovereign debt.

After the official welcome by president Rousseff, the leaders will begin a closed-doors plenary session.
