US Supreme Court deliberates over vulture funds case

The US Supreme Court has began to deliberate at closed doors on the Argentine appeal request in the case against vulture funds due to the 2001 default, with a special focus on the possible global consequences of the Court’s ruling.

The conference of the nine judges who made up the Court will decide whether to hear Argentina’s appeal of rulings requiring it to pay the holdout bondholders back in full.

The decision is to be taken by simple majority and a verdict is expected on Monday.

But a final outcome could arrive as late as next year if the judges decide to ask the US government for an opinion on the case before ruling.

An adverse verdict would set Argentina on the brink of default over the country’s debt restructuring of 2005 and 2010.
