Actress and tango singer Virginia Luque dies at 86

Renowned actress and tango singer Virginia Luque died at 86 of an infectious disease last night at his home in Buenos Aires, her husband Lionel Godoy confirmed. There is a wake for her remains at Córdoba Avenue 5080, Buenos Aires City, and she will be buried today at 3.15 p.m in the Actors Panteon in Chacarita Cemetery.

Born on October 4, 1927 in Buenos Aires, Virginia Luque – whose real name was Violeta Mabel Domínguez- described herself as “an actress who sings”.

Known as “Buenos Aires’ star”, she was only 15 when she took her first steps in theatre, with Josefina Díaz’s and Manuel Collado’s Spanish Comedy Company, and then had a prolific career in films (over 30 movies), as well as in radio and television. But she will be most remembered as a tango singer.

After meeting singer and composer Azucena Maizaini, Luque began to build a brilliant career in tango. She took her first steps with Uruguayan composer Francisco Canaro, with whom she shared the stage in “The song of the neighbourhoods” (La canción de los barrios) and throughout her life she took tango to different stages around the world.

In 1995 Luque won the “Cóndor de Plata” lifetime achievement award and Konex award for her career as female tango singer in 1995 and 1996.

After an accidental fall in 2012, Luque suffered a skin infection that became hard to treat due to her allergy to penicillin.
