The Banking Association union went on a 24-hour strike today, despite the government’s efforts to reach a deal yesterday. The workers rejected the mandatory conciliation declared yesterday by the Ministry of Labour and went ahead with a walkout that affects both public and private banks nationwide.
“If we are not heard we have no other choice but to go on strike”, the Union’s press secretary Eduardo Berrozpe said. The Union dismissed the mandatory conciliation declared by the Ministry of Labour for being “inadmissible” and warned the walkout “will continue if there is no solution” to the bankers’ claims.
Bankers went on strike to repudiate the repression against workers of Tucumán province’s Caja Popular de Ahorros while they were protesting after being laid off. The Association demands that the employees are reinstated and that those responsible for the crackdown are brought to justice.
“The Ministry of Labour ordered the reinstatement of the workers and Tucumán’s authorities did not comply with that decision,” the Union said.
Berrozpe hold Tucumán province governor José Alperovich responsible for “shooting 22 bankers in cold blood” and called for punishment for those responsible for the crackdown, who have yet to be identified.
“Alperovich’s repression attempts against Néstor and Cristina Kirchner’s human rights policy,” the spokesman stated.
