Governor Daniel Scioli considered the trial-by-jury system that came into force today in the province of Buenos Aires is “the base of the democratic concept of justice.”
“They (jurors) will have the civil responsibility to represent the people of the province of Buenos Aires,” Scioli told reporters during a rally in the city of La Plata to select 12,000 residents who will called to court.
The governor of Argentina’s most populated district added that jurors’ duty “will not be easy.” “They will be deciding on the most sacred, which is life and people’s freedom.”
The law that okays trial by jury in BA province for cases that could have a minimum penalty of 15 years in prison was approved in September 2013. It establishes that any person between 21 and 75 years old can be called to be part of a jury in a criminal case.
