Cuban opposition blogger Yoani Sánchez announced the launching of her digital newspaper “14ymedio”, the first independent media in the island in half a century. The journal, which will be online on May 21, is to “tell Cuba from inside Cuba”.
«The [newspaper] website will be online on May 21. Although we would have wanted to have it running today, I have to admit that sometimes technology is very willful,» Sánchez wrote in her blog GeneraciónY.
Last month, the blogger explained that her newspaper will be distributed «through cellphones and via e-mail […] as well as through USB flash drives, DVDs and CDs».
«Hopefully [the newspaper] will help and accompany the needed transition to occur in our country,» the 38 year-old philologist and opposition activist pointed out.
But she admitted «it will be a difficult path», given Cuban communist regime controls the media and considers any opposition illegal. “In the past weeks we have experienced a preview on how official propaganda will try to demonise us for creating this,» Sánchez said and explained that several members of her team had received «warning calls» from State Security.
In recent years, Sanchez has become one of the most recognized critical voices outside the island because of her blog, for which she won many international awards, including the Ortega and Gasset Prize for Digital Journalism in 2008 and the Maria Moors Cabot Award by Columbia University in 2009.
