The Metallurgical Workers’ Union (UOM) has announced a national strike of 24 hours for tomorrow, demanding that employers in the sector negotiate salary rises in line with the 29.6 percent hike set in a national agreement.
Antonio Caló, secretary-general of the UOM and leader of the government-allied CGT umbrella union, revealed the measure in a statement that was released in several newspapers this morning.
According to the unionist, the strike was decided «due to the refusal of metallurgical companies belonging to the Techint group – led by Paolo Rocca – and Arcelor Mittal to negotiate wages according to the national agreement and workers’ needs.»
UOM leaders resolved to stop all metalworks activity for 24 hours, corresponding to shifts on Tuesday May 13.
The union agreed raises of 27.25 percent in March, during negotiations with the Labour Ministry and six metallurgical chambers representing businesses in the sector. With one-off payments expected through the year, however, the total rise will reach 29.6 percent in 2014.
