Independiente president Javier Cantero has stepped down as the head of the Avellaneda football club, as the club struggle both on and off the pitch a year after going down to Argentina’s second-tier Nacional B division.
According to reports, the under-pressure director moved aside in order to push through a deal with the opposition to his presidency, who had offered to inject 10 million pesos for the payment of salaries into the club.
Second vice-president Claudio Keblaitis will take temporary command of the Diablos Rojos, after Cantero’s resignation was accepted today following two-and-a-half years at the head of the institution.
