Education unions» leaders hold a press conference to announce a new demonstration for Wednesday 26 as the salary conflict with the Daniel Scioli BA province administration escalates.
Wage negotiations between the Buenos Aires government and representatives of teaching unions in the province have once again broken down, meaning that a strike that has suspended the start of classes for the last 12 days will continue.
«We have decided to continue with forceful measures until a better offer is put on the table,» SUTEBA leader Roberto Baradel affirmed, following a meeting held today with members of the administration of governor Daniel Scioli.
Baradel added that the offer was «practically the same as beforehand, only two or three percentage points were pushed forward into the first installment,» referring to the structure of the proposed pay increase.
Earlier today, union leaders and provincial officials had convened at the Ombudsman’s office in La Plata, with Governor Scioli saying he expected to reach an agreement with teachers.
“The essence of politics is to decompress conflicts, to bring positions closer, to not criminalize issues, to be tolerant and search for consensus,” Scioli affirmed during an official act in La Plata.
“We will make the effort for the children, for their parents and for the teachers, hoping to find responsibility and closer positions from the other part, [to find a] broader agenda that involves not only salaries,” the head of Argentina’s most populated district, where 3.2 million students have not yet been able to begin classes, asserted.
