As the opposition intensifies its criticism of the Kirchnerism-sponsored reform of Argentina’s Penal Code, the cabinet chief questioned politicians that reject an initiative that has not even reached Congress for debate.
In his daily press conference at the Casa Rosada presidential palace, Jorge Capitanich urged political leaders to show “civil maturity” to carry out a “rational and profound debate” on the reform of the Penal Code.
“It is necessary that the Republic of Argentina holds a profound and democratic debate. It can not be that a draft bill creates such a controversy with rival sectors saying they oppose to initiatives that don’t even have parliamentary state,” the head of ministers assured and added politicians “must have civil maturity” and “be able to show dissidences with absolute liberty,” paving the way for a “rational and profound debate.”
Since a commission led by Supreme Court Judge Eugenio Raúl Zaffaroni and shaped up by both government and opposition representatives presented the draft bill involving the overhaul of the Penal Code, many anti-Kirchnerites have voiced their criticism of the project, from Renewal Front head Sergio Massa saying that if approved the reform could lead to the release of “4,000 prisoners,” to PRO party leader Mauricio Macri who held a press conference on Thursday to state the debate should not be “politicized” ahead of the 2015 presidential elections.
