As he affirmed that YPF will become Argentina’s “flagship” to foster investments and reach energy self-sufficiency, the cabinet chief responded to the criticism by the opposition over the compensation deal settled this week with Spain’s Repsol. If the opposition was to govern the country, it would be absolutely disastrous, Jorge Capitanich said.
During his daily message to the press at the government house, Jorge Capitanich blasted statements by some opposition sectors that questioned the agreement reached between the Kirchnerite administration and the Spanish company to settle the legal dispute over the 2012 expropriation of Argentina’s energy giant YPF.
Both left-wing and right-wing opposition parties, the head of ministers stated, considered the accord was necessary and once it was done, they opposed to it.
“What would happen if part of the political opposition governed Argentina? It would be something absolutely disastrous because their position is to be against each of one of the government’s actions,” Capitanich insisted.
“They use the word consensus, they promote extreme consensus and when the YPF nationalization bill was submitted to Congress, many opposition groups, from the left and from the right, said it was necessary to come to an agreement and when we did, they opposed it.”
The minister also stepped up his criticism of what the Cristina Fernández de Kirchner considers «opposition media» –mainly the Clarín group that a government-sponsored broadcasting law has forced it to dismantle its TV and radio empire and abide by the AFSCA media watchdog resolutions. “Many media pretend to make the Economy Minister Axel Kicillof say what he never said. He never said that we were not going to pay Repsol but that we weren’t going to pay what they wanted us to pay them,” the cabinet chief affirmed and accused anti-Kirchnerite sectors of “lying shamelessly and systematically.”
