A survey published by the Uruguayan daily El país says that 46 percent of the country’s population is not aware of who is currently in political control of the Malvinas Islands while 43 of the polled believe it is the United Kingdom. Only 9 percent said Argentina was in control of the British-seized territories.
The poll was conducted by the private consulting agency Factum and published by the newspaper El país. 41 percent of Uruguayans said that their country supports Buenos Aires sovereignty claims over the resource-rich archipelago that remains in control of London since 1833.
Meanwhile, 64 percent of the survey respondents disagreed with the José Mujica administration’s decision to ban UK-flagged vessels in their way from the Malvinas Islands from accessing the country’s ports for restock, a joint move by state members of the regional Mercosur trade bloc in a show of solidarity with Argentina. Only 25 percent supported the protest action while 80 percent considered Montevideo should keep ties with the Islands.
Another rule that prohibits British military vessels in their way to Malvinas was resisted by 54 percent of the people surveyed by Factum while 32 percent were ok with it.
