As unionized teachers threaten to paralyze the beginning of classes in the province of Buenos Aires, the cabinet chief confirmed collective bargaining negotiations with the sector for Friday 21. “The state is not the employer,” Jorge Capitanich warned.
Addressing reporters at the government house, Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich announced talks with teachers’ unions will start by the end of this week although he pointed out that salaries are a «responsibility of each provincial jurisdiction.»
“The state is not the employer. The national state sets the initial salary not the basic salary. Salary composition varies depending on each jurisdiction,” the head of ministers stressed.
The announcement comes as Buenos Aires province teachers’ unions intensify their demands of a 35 percent wage hike for this year, saying school classes won’t begin on March 5 as scheduled if negotiations with the administration of governor Daniel Scioli fail.
