Córdoba Court drops charges on former President Menem

MenemBy reversing an earlier ruling, Cordoba’s Appeals Court has dismissed charges faced by former President Carlos Saul Menem, who was accused of alleged involvement in the Río Tercero’s military factory explosion in 1995 which claimed the lives of seven people.

Judges Ignacio Vélez Funes, Vicente Muscará and Rafael Vaggione also backed the dismissal of Martín Balza, ex head of the army at that time.

According to the magistrate’s decision, the evidence presented “was insufficent to motivate an indictment,” against Argentina’s president between 1989-1999.

Five retired soldiers still face charges of criminal mischief, related to the deaths of Carlos Jorge Franke, Edberto González de la Vega, Jorge Antonio Cornejo Torino, Oscar Nicolás Quiroga, Marcelo Diego Gatto and Norberto Osvaldo Emanuel.
