BA teachers reject 20% wage hike offer

Suteba Roberto Baradel

The head of SUTEBA Buenos Aires province teachers’ union Roberto Baradel, came on stage again today to reject a 20 percent wage hike offered by the Daniel Scioli administration and considered a one-year deal cannot be reached under Argentina’s economic context.
Baradel said “even a 25 percent hike is not enough.” “In addition to the reconstruction of salaries, and of maintaining our purchasing power, we must improve the salary level,” he warned.
He insisted the agreement should only last the first months of the year, because given the current economic situation, “no conditions are given for an annual agreement.” “We hope the government manages to change this economic situation,” Baradel said.
Speaking to a local radio, he said the union held “informal talks” with the national government and is awaiting a formal call.
Yesterday, Baradel warned that the beginning of the school year will exclusively depend on the Scioli’s provincial administration.
