Will sign a more austere contract after meeting D’Onofrio
Ramón Díaz and Rodolfo D’Onofrio met for two and a half hours yesterday and discussed all the issues that the new president was worried about. The coach agreed to renegotiate his contract to a more austere one.
River Plate coach Ramón Díaz agreed to renegotiate his contract to December 2015 for a more austere one after he met the club’s new president Rodolfo D’Onofrio yesterday.
After a two-and-a-half hour meeting, Díaz said that “the fans have to me calm because our contract will be controlled and modified.”
“The president explained to us the club’s financial problem and we decided to modify everything it needs in order to make things better,” said the coach in a press conference.
River’s treasurer Andrés Ballotta went with D’Onofrio in the meeting to explain to Díaz the economical and financial situation of the club.
The president, who won the elections on Sunday, said that Díaz requested “two forwards” and one of them is Fernando Cavenaghi, who has already recognized his desire to return to the club.
D’Onofrio also said that the possibility of signing Ignacio Scocco, who is playing in Inter of Porto Alegre, is not ruled out, but added that due to the “economic problems, it’s important to know if he wants to come and then we will have to find a way to sign him.”
Scocco led Newell’s Old Boys to the Final Tournament 2013 title, in which he finished as the championship leading goalscorer. He was transferred at the end of the season to the Brazilian team, where he did not have much first team action.
Both Díaz and D’Onofrio praised Cavenaghi, whose contract with Pachuca of Mexico finishes. The president said that “if the striker had been with the team since Ramón arrived, we would have won the championship.”
In the meeting, they also agreed that the pre-season will be in Tandil. “We know that in Tandil there are a lot of River supporters. We know the place and the people,” Díaz said.
One of the players who was sidelined from the squad in the last few matches of the Initial Tournament was Jonathan Bottinelli, who said yesterday that “it’s very difficult” for him to continue with River as he is not in the coach’s plan for the first team.
The defender, who signed with River in June 2012, added that “it could be a good thing to go to another club to play more.”
Coach Díaz said that he has not yet decided the players he wants in the squad.
