While the situation was apparently returning to normal after massive lootings and chaos across the country, the death toll from the violence reported this week reached nine, according to official data released this morning.
The latest death was confirmed in Tucumán province, one of the most hit districts by disturbances prompted by a police protest to demand wage hikes.
The looting in the province provoked by the strike, followed by bloody clashes between police forces and residents who protested outside Tucumán’s Government House following the violence, today provoked the resignation of police chief Jorge Racedo.
«The police should have held their ground, and not repressed. The people had every right to express their anger,» the outgoing head of the security force admitted in a press conference as he tendered his resignation.
The ninth fatal victim joins two victims reported in Chaco, one in Buenos Aires, one in Córdoba, one in Entre Ríos and another one in Jujuy.
Tucumán’s Health Minister, Pablo Yendlin, informed almost a hundred injured were treated in different hospitals in the last 48 hours.
Public transportation, schools banks and waste collection services returned to normal while the «benjamín Matienzo» local airport was reopened.
According to the provincial government, around 250 stores were looted, causing losses worth 75 million pesos.
