Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich met today with all 7 members of Argentina’s Supreme Court. Although the head of ministers had expressed his hopes to discuss the wave of lootings that spread across the country over the past days, the focus of the meeting was the improvement of judicial proceedings.
According to the Center of Judicial Information (CIJ), the officials addressed the “need to work on the improvement of the judicial service and particularly the appointment of judges and the problems in the administration of the Council of magistrates,” -a key judicial body that is in charge of designating judges and presenting charges against them to an Accusation Jury. The Council is also responsible of suspending or deposing them.
Prior to the reunion, while addressing reporters at the government house, the minister considered today’s gathering a “good opportunity” to jointly discuss the investigation over the lootings that hit several provinces over the past days as a result of a police strike.
“It is essential facts are duly investigated not only to severely punish the perpetrators but also to identify which was the strategy and for what purpose, resulting in an action of such nature that could not be neutralized,” Capitanich had said.
