Second leg against Ponte Preta to be held on Wednesday
Lanús tied 1-1 with Ponte Preta in the South American Cup first leg match in Brazil. Second leg is scheduled for Wednesday. The team coached by Guillermo Barros Schelotto is trying to clinch its first international title of the last 17 years.
SAO PAULO — Lanús tied 1-1 with Ponte Preta of Brazil in the first leg final match of the South American Cup at Pacaembú stadium in Sâo Paulo.
Lanús striker Santiago Silva from Uruguay missed a clear scoring chance a few seconds before half-time with the goal empty.
Paolo Goltz scored for Lanús in the 57th minute through a long distance free-kick while Felipe Bastos levelled the scoring in the 78th.
Lanús wants to clinch its first international title of the last 17 years. Lanús won the Conmebol Cup title in 1996. Its last domestic crown was won in the Apertura Tournament in 2007.
The Argentine side also remains in the Initial Tournament title contention, which will be defined on December 15. Lanús shares the second place with Vélez Sarsfield and Newell‘s Old Boys, two points behind leader San Lorenzo with one round remaining.
Ponte Preta was relegated last week in the Brazilian League.
The second leg match will be held on Wednesday at Lanús stadium.
