Former Argentina international footballer Diego Placente was arrested in Germany, on allegations that the ex-Bayer Leverkusen practiced tax evasion during his time living in the European country.
The left-back, 36, was stopped on Monday when he arrived in the city of Cologne. Although the reason is yet to be confirmed, it is believed that Placente owes a substantial debt to the German tax authorities.
«That is a crime which generates a lot of indignation in Germany. All the same, he will be innocent until proven guilty,» a source told Telám today.
The veteran of the 2002 World Cup last represented Buenos Aires institution Argentinos Juniors, before leaving towards the end of the 2013 Final tournament due to a dispute with coach Ricardo Caruso Lombardi. Since leaving the La Paternal outfit, Placente is yet to find a new club.
