Last-minute strike gains Boca victory over Tigre

A last-minute header from Daniel Díaz helped Boca Juniors complete a remarkable comeback as they downed Tigre 2-1 at the Bombonera, launching the team directed by Carlos Bianchi directly into the Inicial title race.

The hosts dominated throughout against a defensive Tigre, but were struck an early blow in bizarre circumstances. A seemingly-innocuous cross was diverted by defender Claudio Pérez into his own net, handing the away team the lead.

Boca kept pushing forward, with Tigre reduced to 10 men in the second half when Matías Pérez García was expelled. Five minutes from the end, the Xeneize appeared to have rescued a draw when young playmaker Leandro Paredes, who started alongside Juan Román Riquelme for the first time, equalised with a brilliant low shot from outside the area.

But there was to be another twist. In the second minute of injury time, Riquelme’s cross found Pérez who headed home to the delight of the Boca faithful, sealing victory.

Boca move joint-second with San Lorenzo in the 2013 Inicial, just two points behind leaders Newell’s with 27 points each.
