Argentine tennis star Juan Martín del Potro had to dig deep in the opening match of his ATP World Tour Finals campaign in London, coming back from a set down to overcome Richard Gasquet and register a winning start to the elite tournament.
The world No. 5 started as favourite against French star Gasquet, one of the final players to qualify for the competition that brings together the eight highest-ranked tennis professionals. But Del Potro took time to find his rhythm, and lost the first set on a tie-break.
The ‘Tandil Tower’ bounced back from that indifferent start to take the subsequent sets, finally wrapping up a 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 7-5 victory on the first of two match points when Gasquet returned a monstrous serve into the net.
The win means that Del Potro goes to the top of Group B, which also plays host to Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. The Swiss and Serbian legends will face off tomorrow to close the first matches of the round-robin tournament.
